Safe With Me: A psychological thriller so tense it will take your breath awayDescription: A psychological thriller by K.L. Slater, that takes us into the lonely world of a disturbed young woman her past demons, and what happens when circumstances bring her face-to-face with one of those demons.
Plot: A young, isolated woman suffering from OCD and other mental issues related to an abusive and tragic childhood, finds herself the primary witness of an accident involving a stranger and a woman from her past whom she believes helped kill her brother. Becoming fixated on the man hurt in the crash, she uses the opportunity to seek revenge on the woman to the detriment of her job.
Characterization: The characters are reasonably well developed, especially, the protagonist. I was enthralled with the way the author shows you the decompensating mind of mental illness. The point of view switches between main characters, as well as, from the present to the past. At times, I did find this a bit jarring.
Setting: Europe; outside of Nottingham; her place of work, home, and the home of the accident victim.
Other: Anna’s obsession with Liam reminded me Misery, written by Stephen King. However, the ending left me wondering and a bit dissatisfied. It felt as if the author wanted to tie up loose ends, but in doing so flipped the story upside-down. I won’t say more as it would ruin the ending for you.
Overall: A good story, which started a bit slow, but soon, drew me into Anna’s psychosis and obsession. Sub-plots added twists and turns, which kept me reading and in the end surprised me. Overall, a good read and one I would recommend.

Safe With Me A tense psychological thriller eBook KL Slater Reviews
Wow, the only thing reason I'm giving this book four stars instead of five stars is because to me it started a little too slow but even as I write this I'm wondering if that slow start was done for a reason because it sure speeded up the farther along I got. All of the characters were so well drawn, Anna in particular.
I felt so bad for her and everything she had been through but I alternated between wanting to hug her one minute and the next to try to shake some sense into her. She was really the poster child for denial!
I won't say anything more for fear of inadvertently giving something away. Highly recommended.
Safe With Me by K. L. Slater is a psychological thriller that has secured its place on my 2017 Top Books list. The number one spot so far, in fact. And 2017 is almost over, so chances are, it will stay there! And to believe this is her debut psychological thriller, to boot! Ms. Slater has jumped to the top of my favorite author’s list, along with Carol Wyer, Mark Edwards, and Patricia Gibney.
Safe With Me is a story about Anna, Carla, and Liam. Anna witnesses a vehicle versus motorbike accident, where she rushes to the biker’s side to hold his hand while they await the medics.
And then she sees the driver of the vehicle. Memories from 13 years ago come flooding back, and Anna’s plan to see this woman punished is born. Carla nearly killed a biker, and she shall pay!
Liam, the biker, lands in the hospital snoozing in a coma. Anna visits him and meets his grandmother, Ivy. She becomes a regular visitor, both at the hospital, then at home upon his release from the hospital. She is even letting her duties go as a letter carrier for the sake of tending to Liam. It appears as though messing with mail delivery is taken just as seriously in the UK as it is in the US.
If you like unreliable characters…
Safe With Me is the ultimate book for unreliable characters, with some mental instability to boot.
Anna is an interesting character. I was fascinated with her thought processes and actions. Her character unfolded slowly throughout the book, and the more she unraveled, the more engrossing she became! For me, she made the book what it was. Amazing.
The story tosses back and forth between current day and thirteen years ago. The past storyline consists of Carla and Daniel, Anna’s then 8-year-old brother. Daniel is troubled, and Carla desperately wishes to help him. But, according to present day Anna, Carla deserves to be punished for what happened to Daniel. Hmmm…
I know some people gave Safe With Me a mediocre review, to each their own. No mediocracy found here. I thought that Ms. Slater’s book had rich characters, a twisty, fascinating storyline, and held my attention entirely until the end.
I’d like to give Safe With Me 6-stars. However, I must round it down to 5, as that is all Goodreads and allow.
P.S. Kudos to the narrator of the audible version of this book, Lucy Price-Lewis. She was amazing. She brought the characters to life even more! Audible.com has 54 books credited to her voice – I may peruse them for others to “read” by her narration.
I loved this debut novel by K.L Slater! The character development was amazing and I really liked the aspect of seeing the story build through the eyes of the protagonist, Anna who quite obviously had psychiatric problems of her own. But she definitely wasn't the only one in this story with issues. It's definitely worth the $3 for a quick, highly entertaining read.
Really? A debut? They say that those are the best and Wow!!!
I was consumed by this book. Spent two nights reading until the sun came up.
The awesome-creepiness of the book was due to the first person view of Anna. What a nut case! But seeing things from her point of view? Wow.
And then no one was who you thought they were. I don't want to give anything away, but nothing is what you expect and then that happens again. And again.
I love the character development. And I loved being wrong about what I just knew was right.
I know this may seem weak as a review ... I just don't want to do spoilers. But if you are in to psychological thrillers and strong characters and twists, then this is for you!
I don't know how K.L Slater did it without being psychotic too! The scenes were at time so awkward because you simply cannot believe that someone's brain works this way! Reminiscent of the Stephen King novel (particularly of the movie version with Kathy Bates and James Caan.
